Accommodation in Zagreb spans from hostels to luxury hotels. In recent years there has been a blast of Zagreb hostels that offer excellent value for your money. Most are modern, elegant, suitably located and some offer doubles with en suite facilities.

While accommodation prices along the coast vary according the season, prices in Zagreb stay the same all year around. Actually you won’t get lower prices, even coming off-season. In fact you could pay more in the spring or in fall season if you come during some major Zagreb spring festivals or during fairs like famous Zagreb International Fall Fair.

Visiting Croatia, Zagreb, as its cultural, scientific and economic heart will be probably your starting point. Zagreb is a great city for backpackers. Find your accommodation in Zagreb central part which is easy to navigate on foot or by tram. From there you can easily reach both, 19th century Lower Town much more dynamic area, filled with cafés, theaters and parks and the medieval Upper Town, the home of the Presidential Palace, historic St.Mark’s church and numerous museums and galleries. The New Zagreb is the only part that has little to offers to travelers.

Each year more and more tourists are visiting Zagreb and the demand for a cheap accommodation at a good price, has been growing rapidly. Zagreb in recent years has experienced an unexpected growth of new hostels, when just in one year (2014) have been inaugurated more than ten new ones.

The new hostels have a very innovative design and all offer a lot more than a bed at a good price. The most services are free such as WI-Fi , cable TV, safes, kitchens and it’s not rare to offer the breakfast. This hostel named by the Britanski trg (British square) , is located close to open-air farmers’ marketplace. There are a total of 13 different rooms, from two to 12 beds per room, and prices are from 105 to 180 kuna.

Guests can use the free internet and designer furnishings bar open 0-24 with a piano often used for various interesting entertainment. All the equipment, such as bedding, towels or air-conditioning in the rooms is free of charge.

Smoking is prohibited in the rooms. Toilets are divided into male and female. Hostel also offers the use of washing and drying machines for 40 kuna.

Swanky Mint Hostel, Ilica street, 50

Centrally located (close to Ban Jelacic Square), this hostel was built on the site of former dyeing and dry cleaning family Ondrusek company (since 1887). The only features left from that period are the huge iron and scrap iron steam engine.

The hostel has 57 rooms with two to nine beds per room. Prices are per night from 120 to 760 Kuna. Private rooms are equipped with satellite TV, air conditioning and a private bathroom. All rooms have secured cabinets that can be locked.

This hostel also has a bar that serves breakfast, terrace overlooking the garden with a pool and the kitchen with all appliances. It’s one of Zagreb hostels that every Friday with the bar’s happy hour.

Chill-out hostel, Tomiceva street 5a

The main advantage of this hostel is its location, just at the foot of Zagreb funicular, one of the city trademarks. It’s the largest hostel in the city, with 170 beds.

This hostel has 37 rooms and prices range from 110 to 250 Kuna for the night. In addition to free internet access, guests can use a large bar open 0-24 hours, kitchen, dining room, bathroom, laundry room and a dryer for 40 kuna.

This hostel in the evening organizes the variety of themed events, such as making pancakes, karaoke or Harry Potter party.

Hostel Chic, Pavle Hatz Street 10

This modern hostel is one of the recently opened in the very center of the city. It boasts with an excellent position, tram stop is 300 m away, the Main Railway Station is at walking distance. Zagreb International Airport is only 10 km away.

There are a total of six rooms, three of which are double with private bathroom and three bedrooms with six or eight beds with shared bathroom. Each double room has a private bathroom with shower and TV.

The hostel has a common room for socializing, with a TV and free internet access and a small kitchen. Prices range from 127 to 420 Kuna.

The price includes Internet access, security lockers, air conditioning, use of the kitchen. Note: This hostel is a pet friendly.

Hostel Party, Heinzelova 78a street

The name is said to be the most difficult to figure out. For the restaurant they chose the name ‘Charm’ because of its charming rustic atmosphere while a hostel is named ‘Party’. This name is given as it is intended mainly to young people, looking for relax and a lot of fun.

There are seven four-bed rooms that cost 100 Kuna per person and four suites that are 50 kuna more expensive. The restaurant’s menu is based on the barbecue, spit and baking, and the prices are affordable.

For example, for Slavonia’s rich stew with smoked meat and vegetables , last time I was I paid 30 Kuna. Party Hostel offers free WiFi and free private parking. It’s just a step away from the Heinzelova street tram stop.

Art Hostel Like, Varsavska street, 44

Located the crossroads of Varsavska and Draskovic street, this hostel is the first urban art hostel. It’s placed in a historic building whose facade still keeps the look of old Zagreb charm.

The interior has been rearranged in a modern hostel decorated with vivid paintings and graphics. There are a total 17 rooms, of which nine double with private bathroom and the other are dorms with four to eight beds.

Prices go from from 115 to 420 Kuna. Each room has a toilet, and all are equipped with modern furniture. Note: Breakfast is included!

The hostel lobby is a place for socializing and gathering, watching television or surfing the free Internet. Like hostel organizes local excursions, sightseeing, musical performances, artistic evenings, and special gastronomic gatherings for all visitors.

Hostel My Way, Trpimirova street 4/1

Named by Sinatra’s song ‘I did my way’ this nice hostels, enjoys the excellent position for all visitors arriving in Zagreb by train. The central train station is 600 meters away.

It has 10 rooms, two dorms with six beds, two with eight, three with ten beds and three private rooms with large double beds. Room rates range from 100 to 180 kuna per person/night.

My Way offers free internet access, laundry and dryer for 50 Kuna, a large common room, a bar with a favorable selection of drinks and an outdoor terrace. Note: For visitors arriving by car, there is a parking space in front of the hostel.

Upper Town Zagreb Hostels

There are no hotels and very few private accommodation in Zagreb’s Upper town where most of Zagreb nightlife is, but there are some superb new hostels, most of which offer rooms with en suite facilities.
